Field Day and Fun Days

I look at the date and remember the significance of it for our family.  Happy 48th Anniversary Mom and Dad!  I am so thankful for your righteous example.

Last night Spencer was crying in his sleep and I went to him.  As I was comforting him from a bad dream Caleb rolled out of bed.  Caleb stood up and got back into bed.  I went over to him and he was still sound asleep.  It made me wonder how often he falls out of bed!

Last Friday was field day at the school for Andrew and Spencer.  Ruth was a 4th grade helper with the inflatables.  She had fun helping the younger kids, but realized it was more work than fun!  The boys had a lot of fun with things.  I went over to the school for a few hours and watched them with some of their activities.  I had to go back and forth between the two grades.  Caleb was getting worn down so I had to leave before it was over.  It was a fun day for everyone.

Ruth had done a unit at school on insect life cycles.  They had mill worms in the class room.  They are the larvae for a type of beetle. She had brought home a paper asking permission to take the worms home to continue caring for them and watch them grow.  I signed the paper and Ruth was excited to bring home two little worms.  She put them in one of her little bug boxes (that Christmas present has gotten good use!)  She has had fun watching them and caring for them.  She hopes she can keep it alive until it turns into a beetle.  So I guess you could say we have our first “pet” in the house.

We had a rain storm Friday and got over an inch of rain.  This was a welcome thing for our area since we have been so dry.  Our garden is growing well and producing lots of squash right now!  (I picked four more today)  Spencer had planted a lima bean in a cup at school for a unit on plants.  He was excited to watch it grow.  Saturday he helped me plant it into our garden area.  It is growing well and we will see if we get to eat any beans off of it.  Friday evening Neal was tired from a long week of work.  I got out the game Othello and we played a few rounds of it.  It was nice to do something fun and talk together.

Sunday morning Ruth was outside in the yard and found a butterfly.  It was hurt and not flying, so she carried it inside on her hand to show everyone.  It was pretty and she had fun watching it all day.  She had it in her little bug box and took it out to let it crawl around her hands.  Caleb thought it was wonderful there was a butterfly in the house!

Monday morning was so nice in the weather.  I was outside working in the yard and the kids had fun playing, a day off of school for Memorial Day.  Neal helped our friends move into a home.  I am thankful they are still in our ward and at our school, plus they live a lot closer to us now.  That will be fun.  Neal came home and did yard work all afternoon.  We have another tree in the back yard that isn’t looking good.  Neal was wanting to cut it down Monday but our neighbor wasn’t home to ask permission to move some of the fence and let the tree fall in his yard.  So the cutting will have to wait, hopefully the tree wont fall on its own.

Monday evening we had a nice time talking to the kids about what Memorial Day is.  I had looked up graves of some of our ancestors on a web site and we were able to see the grave markers and talk about their lives.  It was a good evening.

Tuesday I was at the grocery store and walking through the baby section.  Caleb was having fun seeing pictures of babies.  Then he asked me “Mommy, can we buy a baby?”  It was funny and I had a good laugh.  I told him we couldn’t but these were just baby things at the store.  He likes to look at babies and notices them where ever we go.

Yesterday evening I was able to get away for an evening and go to book club.  We had a nice discussion and visit.  I am thankful to have friends and people I can do things with.

Today we went to the library and the librarian, Gail, who is always so kind to us gave us our free tee shirts for the reading program a week early.  She said she wanted to make sure I got them for the kids and so she got them out for me.  She is always so friendly.

Today Ruth had a big end of year field trip to Hawaiian Falls, a water park in Waco.  I hope she had fun and was safe.  I was a bit worried because she isn’t that great of a swimmer.  I am sure she was fine.  The kids are getting excited for summer vacation from school.  We are starting to plan all our fun activities together.  It will be fun to visit the museum and zoo and maybe even go swimming together.  We also hope to be able to visit family too!  It should be a wonderful summer.

Spencer running so fast I almost missed him!

Caleb's muddy shoes.  He wanted to take this picture because he could see the view in the window of the camera.

Caleb visiting with Ruth.

Andrew having fun with his class.

Spencer in the water relay.

Andrew doing a sack race.  He fell over twice!

The ending was a tug a war!  Look at Spencer pull!

A little video of Spencer and Andrew doing the races.

I decided I had been taking pictures of the good parts of my yard and lest anyone think my yard is perfect I took pictures of the not so good parts.  This one actually looks okay, since I spent over an hour pulling weeds out from around the pole.

The broken fence, before Neal mended it.

The patchy grass.

The kids had fun playing in the water Monday.  Neal was cleaning the drains.

The tree that is leaning too much.

There is a broken branch in this tree, it just dangles, it is up too high for Neal to reach, so we just have let it go for now.  Maybe it will fall some day.

This is the base of the leaning tree.  Over the last week or so it has tipped and broken the cement at the fence line.  It is also getting blacker at the base, showing that it is rotting. This tree needs to come down!  Hopefully soon I will show pictures of that.

A small branch fell out of the tree.  I was sitting at the computer and heard it fall right outside the window.  I am glad that kids weren't outside playing at the time.

So there are my yards not so glamorous parts.

Family Time

I think the biggest thing this week was the Father and Son’s camp out on Friday night.  Neal has been so busy with work but I felt he really needed to go and spend time with the boys.  So I worked hard to get everything ready for them.  Neal came home from work Friday about 4:30 and looked over everything I had for them and got his personal things ready and then they were off about 5:30.  They had a nice time together.  I know it was a lot of work for Neal but also a good time for him to spend time with the boys.  The weather was nice for them too.  They went to a ranch of a church member in our Stake.  There is a camping area at the ranch where the Stake men and boys were.  I heard there was an excellent turnout this year.  Saturday morning Neal let the boys play in the water of a shallow river close by.  Then they went for a walk.  He remembered to take pictures this year and it looked like a beautiful place.

Saturday the boys got home in the early afternoon.  Andrew and Caleb were asleep and stayed that way for a few hours.  Spencer was cheerful, talkative and was singing.  He was fun to listen to.  When Andrew woke up he had a head ache and fever.  I wondered if he had been bothered by the heat (it had gotten up to 90 degrees that day).  He rested Sunday too and felt fine by Sunday evening.

After the boys played in the water Neal was washing off their feet to get into the car and they got into ants.  Caleb has the most ant bites.  I guess the older boys know what they are and move and brush them off.  Caleb has bites all over and has had a hard time with it.  On Monday he was outside with me in the yard and saw an ant and started to cry.  He ran into the house and just happened to see a fly and an ant in the kitchen.  He was all upset and said we shouldn’t have flies and ants in the house.  “We should only have butterflies.  Why can’t we have butterflies in the house?”  It was really cute.  He loves to sing and it is fun to listen to him.

Friday after the boys left, Ruth and I had our time together.  We went out to dinner and then went to a play.  Neal and I had bought tickets for the musical “Oklahoma!” about two months ago.  Then we found out about the camp out.  I took Ruth to the musical and we enjoyed the evening together.  She loved the story and was swept away with the music.  It was fun to be with her as she experienced the play for the first time.  Saturday morning was quiet for us.  Ruth got out the VHS tape I have of “Oklahoma!” and we had fun watching it again.  Well, she watched it while I was working on other things, but I enjoyed listening to the music again.  It was nice to spend some time with Ruth.

Sunday since Andrew wasn’t feeling well I stayed home from church with him.  I got on the computer and had fun exploring the church web site of “Family Tree.”  It was neat to see all the connections and family genealogy.  It was also fun to see the pictures and read some of the stories that my dad has linked onto ancestors.  He has done a lot of work with that.

Monday we had a nice FHE.  I think the high light was watching the kids play “Simon Says” and hearing Caleb say some pretty crazy things to do when it was his turn.  He is a silly kid and he loves to tease.  He was laughing so hard we had a hard time understanding some of the things he would say.  We then went outside and played a game of freeze tag with the kids.  It was a beautiful evening and nice to be outside with everyone.

Tuesday afternoon we had a bad storm come through the area.  We are fine, in fact we only got about a half inch of rain.  But it was very dark and that always worries me.  I think the storm hit harder north of us.

Saturday I got some apricots from the Bountiful Basket program.  Today I was able to bottle them up.  I did 5 pints of jam and 3 quarts of fruit.  I like apricots.  I made a cobbler the other day that we all enjoyed.  It has been fun to eat them fresh too.  Our garden is growing well and we are getting things from it, mostly squash!  I have also picked green beans, peas, lettuce and spinach this week.  Everything is looking so green right now.  I like this time of year when everything is growing and the world is so beautiful.  I am enjoying all my flowers too.

The cactus in the corner of our garden area, it was so pretty with the flowers Sunday.  The flowers only last a day and they are fun to watch for this time of year.

My roses are blooming!  They smell so good!

Our back yard just looked extra green to me.

I have really enjoyed this bush.  These little blue flowers are on it all summer long.
