A Sunny Winter

January has been a good month for our family. A few big events have happened in the last few weeks. For Ruth, she got her provisional driver’s license. This means she can drive without me. We are all happy that she has her independence with driving and can get herself to early morning seminary, school and work. It has been nice. Ruth and I also have worked on making a pioneer outfit for her. This summer the Stake is doing a Pioneer Trek and with Ruth being on the Stake youth council she had the assignment to demonstrate pioneer clothing. We made a dress, apron and bonnet. I think she looks cute in her outfit. Last Sunday we had the fireside for the youth to start thinking about Trek and introduce the activity to everyone. Ruth wore her outfit and had many compliments.

Andrew’s big event was his Eagle Court of Honor that was held on January 19th. It was a special night. Andrew and four other young men in our ward earned their Eagle. We had a nice evening with the ceremony of it all and nice refreshments that the families put together. Everyone stayed around for awhile visiting too. Andrew honored Mr. Hovey as his mentor. Mr. Hovey is the leader of the youth train club and Andrew has learned to look up to him and appreciates his leadership and help with the youth. I realized recently that they boys have been going to train club for three years now. Mr. Hovey has been a good example and friend.

Spencer, Andrew, Caleb and Neal enjoyed going swimming together on the 18th. Spencer came home from it and combed his hair funny. He is happy and enjoying life. He made a really cool truck with Lego. The wheels all turn together and it is easy to steer. He is amazing with his building abilities. To start off the new semester at school the band teacher had seating playing tests. Spencer was happy to be placed as first chair in the saxophones. Andrew and Spencer went to a party last Saturday to have fun with their friend Nathan before his family moves.  Nathan has been a good friend with the boys since we moved here and their family will be missed.

Happy Spencer with crazy hair

The boys went to Mr. Hovey’s home last Saturday morning for some train running and building. There were others there too and Neal was with them. They enjoyed some time working on train cars. The boys have their work stations set up and have been busy building things and working on train things a lot. Andrew received some n-scale building kits for Christmas that he had to build. They do very well with their craft.

The work table. Below is a picture of their train tables.
Yes, we put them in the front room.
I think trains are taking over our house!

Caleb continues to enjoy basketball. Last night Andrew needed to play at the high school basketball game with band. I took Caleb and we watched the game. We were sitting by the band and it was fun to hear them play in time outs. Caleb loved watching the boys play and could tell you many stats from the game if asked. Our high school won, so that was fun too.

Over Christmas break when Neal’s mom was visiting she started reading the first book in “The Work and the Glory” series by Gerald Lund. The kids enjoyed listening to her read in the evening by the fire. After she left Caleb was the one that picked up the book and continued reading. He has really enjoyed the story. He is on volume three now and wants to read the entire series this year.

Last Saturday I went to a Stake Relief Society conference. I enjoyed attending the classes and visiting with friends. I also enjoyed doing a bit of yard work in the afternoon. Some days the weather is so nice here. It can get up to 50 degrees or so and be sunny, and quite nice to be outside. Other days it is cold. Two weeks ago we had a storm that got things wet and cold. We had a two hour delay for school one morning because of the worry of ice. I finished putting together a puzzle last week. I enjoy doing them in quiet times. I also have been reading a lot. I enjoyed going to book club meetings, I go to two groups and I always enjoy the discussions about books we read. It is good to think about them more and share ideas.

Neal is keeping busy with work and home things. He had his birthday this month. We celebrated on Saturday the 18th since his birthday was on the 19th and that was the day we had the court of honor for Andrew. Last week he was in Texas for three days for work meetings. We missed him being here. He is riding his bike almost every day to work now. The exercise is good and also it helps to get through the construction mess through the air force base gate.

I am thankful for a good family.
